          Early Life and Education

          Martin Van Buren was born on December 5, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York, to Abraham and Maria Hoes Van Buren.

          His Dutch ancestors had settled in the upper Hudson Valley in 1631. Young Martin received a basic education in Kinderhook, which included Latin, and at age 14, he began an apprenticeship to become a lawyer.

          Legal and Political Career

          In 1803, Van Buren was admitted to the bar, establishing a successful law practice.
