          Early Life and Career

          Edie Gormezano, better known as Edie Gorme, was born on August 16, 1931, in The Bronx, New York City.

          Her immigrant parents hailed from Sicily and Turkey, and she grew up in a working-class neighborhood. After graduating high school, she worked as a translator for the United Nations before pursuing her singing career.

          Musical Breakthrough

          Gorme's breakthrough came in 1950 when she performed with Tommy Tucker's Orchestra and later with Dick Noel.

          Her recordings drew attention and led to her joining a big band previously led by Glenn Miller. In 1952, she released her first solo album on the Coral label.
